The biggest difference is already suggested by its name: you will play it with four cards, not with five, as it is usual in other kinds of poker. As I already said, this is the biggest difference, compared to other kinds of poker. Before we discuss the rules, we should understand the hand values. , since you are only playing with four cards. Here are the possible combinations, ordered from the lowest hand to the best hand: high card, one pair, two pair, and straight, three of a kind, straight flush and four of a kind. As you see the hand values had changed a little, but there are the well known hand values too, like one and two pair, straight flush or three of a kind. Obviously, those hands are missing where a fifth card is required. Now that the hand values are clear, let us see how a game goes on.

Before the game starts the players have to make an ante bet and an aces-up bet. After every player had made its bet, the dealer gives five cards to each player and six cards to himself. All the cards are dealt face down, except the sixth card of the dealer which is dealt face up. Now the players have to decide on what they want to do next. They have two options: to fold or to raise the pot. If a player folds, he will lose the ante and the aces-up bet. If a player wants to raise the pot, he will have to raise from one time to three times the ante bet. After each player had decided on what is he going to do, each will discard a card and form the best possible hand from the four cards left. After each player had made his decision, the dealer discards two cards from his six cards and he too will form the best possible hand. Now the player’s hand is compared to the dealer’s hand based on the hand values listed above, and the best hand wins. In the case when the player’s hand is equal to the dealer’s hand the ante and raise bets are paid one to one. If a player has somewhat better cards, he might receive a bonus, as follows. For three of a kind paid 2 to 1, a straight flush is paid 20 to 1; a four of a kind is 25 to 1. So these are the rules you should know before you sit down to play four cards poker.

Now let us say a few words about the strategy. Although it is a quite new game, several playing strategies exist already. Here is the simplest and safest one. If you have only a pair of twos, or even less, you should fold. If you have at least a pair of threes to nines you should bet the ante one times, but if you have at least a pair of tens, or even a better hand, you should bet the ante three times. This is the simplest strategy of all, but it is also the safest. As a general rule: you should fold as early as possible if you consider your hand a low one because this way you will save yourself some money. If you do not fold in time, you will have to make another bet which must be at least equal to the ante, so you will lose twice as much as if you would folded in time. Consider this advice in every kind of game you play, because folding early might save you some money for the next game.

All in all four cards poker is another variety of poker, the rules are almost the same, of course with a little twist, since you are playing with only four cards. Some of the hands are not possible to make because of the missing card, but there are other options to consider when you play this kind of poker. Before you start to play for real money, you should play for free for a while just to make sure you understand the rules and to get used to them.
